Youth in Business South Africa (YIBSA), a platform dedicated to fostering job creators rather than job seekers, hosted a glittering gala dinner to commemorate its 10-year anniversary and honour outstanding entrepreneurs shaping South Africa’s economy.
Recognizing that youth entrepreneurship is a powerful solution to global challenges such as unemployment, poverty, and inequality, YIBSA continues to promote opportunities for sustainable job creation, self-employment, and innovation.
The high-profile event celebrated a decade of advancing entrepreneurship and acknowledged exceptional business leaders driving change in key industries, including agriculture, technology, property, and manufacturing.
A Night of Recognition and Inspiration
The evening was graced by Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga, Minister of Women, Youth, and Persons with Disabilities, who emphasized the importance of youth entrepreneurship. In her keynote address, she remarked:
“This evening is more than just a celebration—it is a powerful reminder of what is possible when young people are included and entrusted with the responsibility of forging their own paths in entrepreneurship. YIBSA’s story is one of grit, innovation, and excellence, proving that youth leaders are not waiting for the system to change; they are taking the helm and changing it themselves.”
Adding to this sentiment, W&RSETA CEO, Mr. Mkhwanazi, expressed why WRSETA has partnered with YIBSA:
“We have witnessed the tangible impact of YIBSA’s work, providing hope to the youth of South Africa. Entrepreneurship must be supported and commended because it holds the key to solving unemployment.”
Mr. Matjie, the Brand South Africa’s CEO further underscored the urgency of empowering young entrepreneurs, stating:
“Supporting youth-owned businesses is not a matter of charity—it is a national imperative. Our economy thrives when young people are given the opportunity to innovate, create, and lead. It is not enough to talk about empowering the youth; we must provide them with the tools, recognition, and support they deserve.”
He concluded by highlighting the crucial role youth play in economic development:
“Young entrepreneurs are not just building businesses; they are creating jobs, driving innovation, and adding immense value to our economy. Their resilience must be acknowledged, and they must be empowered to continue growing. These awards serve as a vital step in ensuring that happens.”
The Visionary Behind YIBSA: Bright Hlongwane’s Journey
The mastermind behind YIBSA, Mr. Bright Hlongwane, reflected on the platform’s incredible journey over the past decade. He shared the challenges he faced, the vision that led to YIBSA’s formation, and his unwavering faith that has guided him.
“God has been my fortress throughout this journey. It was through His guidance that I have been able to walk this path and make it all possible.”
Hlongwane’s perspective on entrepreneurship transformed after he studied at Stanford University in the USA. Upon returning, he realized that young people must be given a seat at the decision-making table. Under his leadership, YIBSA has grown tremendously, proving that “nothing should be done for the youth without the youth.”
Over the past 10 years, YIBSA has been at the forefront of supporting young entrepreneurs by creating opportunities for networking, market access, and unlocking doors to new possibilities.
As he closed the event, Bright expressed his gratitude to everyone who has contributed to YIBSA’s success.
“YIBSA has shaped me into the person I am today. Ten years is no small feat, and I am deeply grateful for this milestone. The journey continues, and we will keep pushing forward to transform youth entrepreneurship in South Africa.”
