The promotion of social cohesion and presenting emerging Maskandi artists with an opportunity to gain exposure by sharing the stage with renowned musical acts once again took centre stage at the 11th edition of the Impucuzeko Maskandi Festival.
The music extravaganza, for which eThekwini Municipality has been lauded for its success, was held at the Moses Mabhida’s People’s Park on 18 August. This was part of the City’s three-year contractual agreement to work with the organisers in hosting the event.
More than 25 000 revellers from all over the country descended on City’s shores for the musical spectacle and over 50 businesses got the opportunity to boost their sales at the event. EThekwini Municipality Spokesperson Gugu Sisilana said the City will continue to support young developing artists and small businesses through financial assistance and presenting them with strategic business opportunities.
“We are extremely proud of hosting yet another successful festival. Now dubbed the World Cup of Maskandi music, the festival not only focussed on the performing arts, but also presented an opportunity for more than 50 businesses to trade,” said Sisilana. Gracing the stage were Gatsheni, Stabhilithi, Mzukulu, Khuzani, Sminoff, Ntencane, Amageza Amahle, Mlabalaba, Sdoni and Sgwebo sentambo, among many others.
Ntethelelo “Ghanda-Ghanda” Buthelezi, leader of a fifteen-member girl group, Omelisizwe, from Empangeni was among those who sang a chorus of appreciation for the opportunity presented to them by the City and event organisers.
