In a heartwarming display of solidarity and community spirit, over 150 volunteers joined forces in Tongaat, Newtown to clean up areas devastated by a recent tornado. Organized by Shincheonji Volunteers in collaboration with Ikamva Youth, Durban Solid Waste, NICRO, and Deep INK, the cleanup initiative aimed not just to restore physical spaces but also to uplift spirits and foster unity.

Ms. Bongiwe Mchunu, leader of Shincheonji Volunteers in Durban, emphasized the importance of translating love and unity into tangible actions beyond the confines of church walls. “It is crucial that we not only preach love and unity but demonstrate it through our actions,” Mchunu stated passionately.

The cleanup operation, timed to coincide with Nelson Mandela Day, held special significance as volunteers sought to honor Mandela’s legacy by serving their community selflessly. The affected communities, still reeling from the tornado’s impact in June, received much-needed support and compassion through the efforts of these dedicated volunteers.

“We wanted to show love and consideration through action,” remarked Mchunu, reflecting on the motivation behind the cleanup. The event not only provided practical assistance but also served as a beacon of hope, showcasing the power of collective action in times of adversity.

Partners Nicro and IkamvaYouth played pivotal roles, their contributions seamlessly blending with the collective effort. Together, they not only cleaned up physical debris but also sowed seeds of hope and solidarity within the community. “We are grateful to be part of this event,” remarked representatives from Nicro and Ikamva Youth, expressing their appreciation for the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the community’s well-being.

Gratitude flowed towards sponsors whose generosity made the event possible. Companies like Bluff Meat Supply, Humble Coffee, The Sweet Slice Bakery, and Vanguard stepped up by providing food and cleaning equipment for the volunteers, underscoring a shared commitment to community well-being.

Shincheonji Volunteers reaffirmed their dedication to ongoing community upliftment and spreading love through practical initiatives. Mchunu expressed heartfelt thanks to all involved, highlighting the impact of collaboration and goodwill in creating positive change. Community members expressed profound gratitude to the volunteers, acknowledging the renewed sense of hope and strength infused into their efforts to rebuild. “This has brought so much hope and given us the strength to continue rebuilding our community,” shared one resident, reflecting the profound impact of the cleanup initiative.

As Newtown continues its recovery journey, the success of this cleanup effort stands as a testament to the strength found in unity and the transformative power of compassionate action.
