Eddie Murphy’s 80’s comedy ‘Coming to America’ is back in a sequel after 30 years.
The 1988 hit comedy will see Eddie Murphy reprise his role as an overly-coddled Zamundan royal, who travels to New York to find the woman of his dreams.
The movie sees the newly-crowned King of Zamunda (Murphy) on a mission to find the son he’s only recently learned he had fathered, and bring him to Zamunda to be his heir, a move that causes a fair bit of consternation in the royal household.
The film’s official synopsis reads: “Set in the lush and royal country of Zamunda, newly-crowned King Akeem (Murphy) and his trusted confidante Semmi (Arsenio Hall) embark on an all-new hilarious adventure that has them traversing the globe from their great African nation to the borough of Queens, New York — where it all began.”
The continuation reunites Eddie Murphy not only with ‘Dolemite is My Name’ director, Craig Brewer, but also original ‘Coming to America’ screenwriters Barry W. Blaustein and David Sheffield.
Kenya Barris (Black-ish) and Justin Kanew (National Lampoon’s Adam & Eve) also worked on the screenplay and story with the pair respectively.
Much of the original cast of the 1988 romantic comedy reunite for this sequel, which will help the film reach iconic status include including King Jaffe Joffer (James Earl Jones), Queen Lisa (Shari Headley), Cleo McDowell (John Amos), Maurice (Louie Anderson), and the motley barbershop crew. Newcomers to the ensemble are Wesley Snipes, Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan, Jermaine Fowler, Bella Murphy, Rotimi, KiKi Layne, Nomzamo Mbatha, and Teyana Taylor.
While ‘Coming to America’ divided critics, it resonated with audiences who were charmed by Murphy’s likable prince; it wound up grossing over $288 million worldwide.
Amazon Studio acquired worldwide rights to ‘Coming to America” from Paramount Pictures and will be launching the sequel in over 240 countries and territories on Amazon Prime Video on March 5, 2021,
