The hotly-anticipated AFROPUNK festival was back this year and offered its devotees all it promised. Thousands of people came from all over Africa to join the celebration of art, politics and music. The countdown to the next AFROPUNK Joburg has begun.
What makes AFROPUNK the event of all events?
This festival is a platform for free expression and draws people from all walks of life. It pays homage to the beauty of being African through a lineup of top local acts and does not shy away from discussing controversial topics from activism and politics to sexuality.
In Johannesburg, one of only six cities in the world to hold an event under the AFROPUNK brand, it is held annually at one of the most significant landmarks in the country, Constitution Hill. The site is a former prison complex, used by South Africa’s apartheid regime, converted into a museum and other mixed-use spaces. It also houses the country’s highest court.
In recent years South Africans have been sure to secure tickets within minutes of them going on sale and the late-December festival has now become a well-known party at which to see in the new year.
If there was ever a festival at which you will not feel judged — AFROPUNK Joburg is it. This is a place where you are free to ‘do you’, express your quirks, be bold or weird, and creative.
